The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB has clarified that its Unified Tertiary Matriculation Exam, UTME is not a ‘fail or pass’ examination.
This clarification comes in light of the 2024 UTME results, released by the board in which seventy-six per cent of candidates scored below 200. This disappointing performance sparked reactions from many Nigerians.
During an interview on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, JAMB’s Spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, explained that the 2024 UTME results, which he disclosed is an improvement from the previous year and 2022, do not solely determine a candidate's admission chances.
According to him, the UTME exam is merely a selection exercise to help coordinate the admission process, with the actual admission dependent on the candidate's performance in their O-level exams.
Mr Benjamin also noted that admission criteria vary among tertiary institutions nationwide.
