IWD 2022: Why Can’t Single Female Officers Get Pregnant?

Table Talk host, Wemimo Adewuni has questioned the police regulation barring single female officers serving in the Force from getting pregnant.

Regulation 127 of the Nigeria Police Force reads that “An unmarried woman police officer, who becomes pregnant shall be discharged by the force and shall not be reenlisted except by the approval of the Inspector General of Police”

Adewuni believes this is absurd and asks: “why should pregnancy even be punished for an adult woman who knows what’s she is doing and doesn’t want to get married?”

Chairperson of the Badagry branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Adaku Mbama, a guest on the show, also agrees.

In her argument, Mbama says this regulatory is discriminatory against women and is not in the interest of the single female officer.

Speaking further, she said it is also inconsistent as the Nigerian constitution has a provision that allows every citizen “a right to private and family life”
