Educationist Dr. Ikechi Nwogu, speaking on Nigeria Info’s Sunny Side, has challenged the traditional norms about education and its real-world applications. Drawing from his personal experience, Dr. Nwogu shared a relatable story. Despite his theoretical knowledge of engineering and wattage, he finds himself reliant on a local mechanic—a young apprentice likely with minimal formal education —when his car breaks down.
Dr. Nwogu noted a critical challenge within Nigeria’s education system: an obsession with certificates while neglecting hands-on application.
“We are knowledge happy, we are certificate happy, but application shy”, he said, underscoring the importance of moving beyond academic credentials to cultivate practical, income-generating skills.
He cited some examples of individuals thriving in fields unrelated to their academic degrees, such as medical doctors excelling in politics or pharmacists finding success in the tech industry.
Dr. Nwogu advised individuals to consider career paths that offer quicker, more sustainable wins, especially in a rapidly evolving job market.
