The Commissioner for Public Affairs and Civic Education at the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Tamunotonye Profit Tobins, has reaffirmed that the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024, will proceed as planned.
This assurance comes despite concerns from local observers about the lack of campaign activities in the state, with some residents fearing that the elections may not take place.
Speaking on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, Mr Tobins reassured the public that the polls will be conducted across the state, as all necessary preparations for a smooth election have been completed.
He also addressed rumours of a court ruling preventing the commission from conducting the elections.
“There is no known court judgment restraining RSIEC from organizing the 2024 local government polls,” Mr Tobins said on Morning Crossfire, noting that the commission operates in accordance with the constitution and state electoral laws.
