Age-appropriate gifts: Nigerians react to lawmaker’s SUV gift to daughter

What is an age-appropriate gift to celebrate a child’s achievement or milestones? The conversation on Nigeria Info’s Sunny Side sought answers to this question.

Inspired by a member of the House of Representatives from Plateau State, Yusuf Gagdi, who gifted his daughter a new SUV after she graduated from secondary school, it also examined the interplay between parental love, societal expectations, and the long-term impact of material rewards on young minds.

Nigerians gave their hot take on the matter, with one caller arguing that financial capability should dictate the nature of a gift, citing the biblical example of Jesus receiving precious gifts at birth.

“Jesus Christ was born and visitors came and they give (sic) him gifts, did Jesus Christ know the value of those gifts at that age?” he asked.

For another caller, allowing children to learn to succeed and make it on their own is important. He warned that without understanding the worth of their possessions, even the children of the wealthiest individuals could squander their inheritance.
