US President-elect Donald Trump has proposed that Canada merge with the United States after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation.

On Monday, Trump claimed that such a union would eliminate tariffs, lower taxes, and enhance security against threats from Russian and Chinese ships. He wrote on Truth Social, "Together, what a great nation it would be!!!"

Trudeau, in power since 2015, decided to step down amid declining approval ratings and internal party struggles. He confirmed he would remain as caretaker until a new leader is selected, with a competitive leadership race set to begin soon.

The resignation comes amidst growing trade tensions, with Trump threatening 25 percent tariffs on Canadian imports. Trudeau had pledged retaliation.
Trump argued the merger would eliminate the trade deficit and subsidies the U.S. provides to Canada, adding that many Canadians might welcome becoming “the 51st State.”

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland criticized Trudeau, accusing him of pursuing “costly political gimmicks.” As Canada enters a period of leadership uncertainty, Trump’s proposal adds fuel to the already tense relationship between the two countries.
