The Supreme Court has overturned the judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja that recognised Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
Delivering a unanimous decision on Friday, a five-member panel of the apex court ruled that the Court of Appeal acted outside its jurisdiction by making a pronouncement on Abure’s chairmanship.
The court held that since the core of the case revolved around the internal leadership structure of a political party, it fell outside the purview of judicial intervention. According to the justices, matters of party leadership are internal affairs that the courts have no authority to adjudicate upon.
The decision came after the apex court considered an appeal filed by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman and one other, which it declared meritorious.
In contrast, the Supreme Court dismissed a cross-appeal filed by Abure’s faction of the Labour Party, describing it as lacking in merit.
The ruling effectively sets aside the earlier decision by the appellate court and casts fresh uncertainty over the leadership structure of the Labour Party.
