The Joint Committee on Electoral Matters has proposed a 30 percent and 40 percent reduction in the salaries of legislators and executive members of government.

Senator Sharafadeen Alli proposed the National Assembly Review during an interactive session with the judiciary and political parties on Monday.

He also suggested an amendment to the Electoral Act 2022.

The proposal suggested a 30 percent reduction in legislators' salaries and a 40 percent reduction in executive salaries.

Political parties also suggested during the meeting that all elections, including those for the president, National Assembly, governors, and State Houses of Assembly, be held on the same day.

They said that the present staggered election system is not economically viable.

They also proposed that continuous voter registration be linked to the National Identity Number (NIN) for added security and to save costs.

However, the registered political parties contended that the executive branch should no longer be responsible for appointing the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, but should inform interested parties.

The joint committee chairman pledged to engage with INEC and Nigerians for comprehensive feedback to minimize disruptions and ensure smooth elections in the future.
