The supermarket chain has closed its Kano store over a “challenging economic situation.”

It first announced its plan to close the store in December 2023 when its management disclosed that other Shoprite locations outside Kano would remain operational.

Last week Friday, less than 48 hours before its exit, Shoprite adjusted its operational hours, shifting from the regular 9 am to 7 pm to a new schedule of 2 pm to 6 pm.

This change occurred amid discussions between the store’s management and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin.

Nigeria Info arrived at the store around 10 am but met the doors closed to customers.

A notice at the entrance explained, "Dear esteemed customers, we are constrained to modify our opening and closing time today to opening at 2 pm and closing at 6 pm. We apologize for any inconvenience."

It was also observed that several shelves were already emptied, indicating the impending reality of ShopRite's exit.

A staff member, requesting anonymity due to lack of authorization to speak, mentioned that despite the Deputy Senate President's intervention, the closure of operations is inevitable by Sunday, January 14th.

A disappointed customer, Ibrahim Mohammed present at the store to make purchases, expressed dismay at the exit of the entity.

“I feel too bad and terrible. I’m used to making purchases here with ease, both the children and family. Seeing that they’re closing is absurd. I'm not happy at all,” he said.
