The FCT Administration has said it will end harassment of motorists and business people by touts who collectrevenue for area councils.
FCT minister, Nyesome Wike stated this on Thursday at the Ministerial Sectoral Update.
The minister disclosed that a committee would be formed with the area councils to harmonize accounts and end double taxation.
“How many months have we been in office? It is just nine months and we cannot solve all the problems at the same time,” he said.
"We have called and sat down with the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) group, and that the only way to allow decency in the collection of revenue, is that we have to sit with them, form a committee and have an account where the revenue comes to the FCT and they collect their own share.
"By doing so, you will reduce touting and harassment, and the double taxation and they have agreed.
“After all, the law allows them to take 10 percent of our IGR. Why are they afraid?"
Wike Urges National Assembly to Review Law Against Vandalism
The FCT minister also asked the National Assembly to review the law against vandalism in the nation's capital.
He noted that the current law prescribing a N10,000 fine on conviction was not punitive enough.
“Take, for example, the issue of streetlights on Abuja streets. Today you put streetlights, tomorrow night, it is no longer there,” he said.
“What happened? They have vandalized them. They cut off the cables.
“You arrest them for prosecution, and What does the law say on conviction? N10,000. So, they continue with the act.”
Wike said the FCT Administration will build 10,000 affordable houses in a future Renewed Hope City for the poor.
