The Coalition of Concerned (Military) Veterans (CCV) has petitioned President Muhammadu Buhari over the delay in the payment of its members’ Security Debarment Allowance.
The veterans are appealing to the president to prevail on the appropriate ministries to pay the allowances before the end of 2022.
And they’re threatening to embark on a peaceful protest that they warn would be a national embarrassment.
Their complaint is coming despite President Buhari’s approval of N134.7 billion during the Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem and Appeal Fund event on 16 November for the payment of Security Debarment Allowance to all veteran military officers.
In the petition signed by the CCV secretary/spokesperson, Abiodun Durowaiye-Herberts, the veterans alleged that no effort seems to have been made by the relevant ministries to pay them despite a series of written appeals and dialogues with the Ministry of Defense and occasional protests.
They also recalled that the same treatment preceded the non-payment of their accumulated 14-months minimum wage arrears until veterans had to embark on protests.
Copied in the petition are the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Chief of Staff to the President, the National Security Adviser, and the Ministers of Defense and Finance.
Others include the Chief Of Defense Staff, the Chief Of Army Staff, the Chief Of Naval Staff, the Chief Of Air Staff, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Legion.
