Power supply has been cut off to homes and businesses in Nigeria’s South East due to a strike by electricity workers.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) Plc sent out a statement explaining that operations across its franchise area have been disrupted.

It blamed this on the industrial action embarked upon by the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE).

As a result, all the EEDC’s feeders are out of supply, according to the company.

It however said consultations were ongoing to address the problem.

On Tuesday, electricity workers issued a strike threat after picketing the headquarters of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) in Abuja.

The NUEE accused the federal government of failing to pay the entitlement of former staff of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) in December 2019.

In a circular issued by the union’s General Secretary, Joe Ajaero, all members were directed to withdraw their services nationwide and ensure all activities of the TCN are crippled.
