A Kano-based philanthropist has donated a geriatric ward building to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).
The ward, the first of its kind in the hospital, was donated by the family of the Managing Director of H&MConstruction company, Alhaji Shazali Hassan.
His brother, Nura Hassan Yakasai, said the donation was under the need and request made by the hospital’s management.
“Actually, the relationship between Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital and our family has been very long. It is long-standing. This is part of our community project,” he said.
“The hospital management looked for it and also the state needed it. It is a specialist ward because it is meant for old people and the first of its kind in this hospital.
“That is why we decided to immortalize our mother and help the community. Many of us that are old will now be able to get better medical care in our old age here.”
The overseeing Chief Medical Director of AKTH, Prof. Auwalu Umar, applauded the gesture and commended the family.
"We are extremely happy about this donation because it gives us an opportunity to have a facility to provide care for the elderly and for us.
“Here we have an outpatient facility where we will be seeing things that can't be seen on an outpatient basis and also have the facility to admit up to 10 on either side - males and females.
"Everything is made for the elderly from the floor, it's customized, not slippery, the wall, there is something that they can hold and other things that are available,” he said.
