Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State is dead.

Akeredolu died in Lagos where he had been receiving treatment for leukaemia.

The ailing governor returned to Nigeria in September following a three-month medical leave in Germany

Following the worsening situation of his health, Akeredolu came under pressure from opposition political parties to resign or hand over power to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The crisis soon deteriorated as state House of Assembly loyalists were at loggerheads with Aiyedatiwa over the running of the state.

The intervention of President Bola Tinubu saw the transfer of power to Lucky Aiyedatiwa in line with the 1999 constitution.
