The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria says the country recorded 22 building collapses between January and July 2024.

Prof. Sadiq Abubakar, the regulatory body governing the practice of engineering in Nigeria, announced this during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

Lagos accounted for 27.27 percent of the cases, while Abuja and Anambra witnessed 18.18 percent each.

Prof. Abubakar said the incidents were worrisome.

He blamed most collapses on aging, inferior building material use, and structural failure.

Other factors include illegal building use, floor addition, quackery, inadequate supervision, faulty foundations, and lack of soil/geotechnical investigation.

The COREN chief wants a unified effort in tackling collapses.

’’All professionals within the built environment have a role to play in this," he said.

’’In this regard, we have identified and categorized many stakeholders that we will be engaging shortly.’’ he added.

Prof. Abubakar warned that the increase in unlicensed mining poses a risk to the stability of structures.
