The Oyo State government has taken decisive legal action weeks after the deadly stampede that occurred during the 18 December 2024 children’s funfair at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan.

On January 10, 2025, the state filed an eight-count charge of murder, manslaughter, and criminal negligence against Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife; Oriyomi Hamzat, the proprietor of an Ibadan-based radio station; and Abdulahi Fasasi, the principal of the school.

The charges filed before the Oyo State High Court allege inadequate crowd control, security, and medical facilities, directly contributing to the deaths of several children, aged between 1.5 and 18 years.

Governor Seyi Makinde has vowed to seek justice for the victims, emphasizing that the tragedy could have been avoided with proper planning.
