About 60 lawyers have commenced a committal to prison proceedings against the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi.

The constitutional and human rights lawyers say the security boss violated multiple judgments and court orders directing the release of the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele, from custody.

The lawyers, led by Maxwell Opara and Ahmed Tijani, want the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to commit the DSS DG to prison.

Emefiele has been in DSS custody since 10 June when he was arrested by the secret police unit.

The DSS detained him without charge until 13 July when the FCT High Court gave the DSS a one-week ultimatum to either arraign or release him.

Emefiele was charged the same day with illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The DSS said he illegally possessed a single-barrel shotgun and 23 rounds of live ammunition.

But the lawyers contend that the former apex bank chief should have been released from detention according to previous judgments and orders of Justices M. A. Hassan, Hamza Muazu, and Bello Kawu.
