The Lagos State Government plans to install 1GW (1,000MW) of photovoltaic (PV) solar energy capacity in the state before 2030.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is proposing a distribution mix of 60% commercial and industrial capacity, 20% residential, and 20% government-owned facilities across different communities in the state.
A statement from the Commissioner, Olalere Odusote emphasised that the state is committed to addressing the grid supply deficit in the state, currently estimated at 33-43 TW.
He disclosed that the project which is in partnership with the World Bank and would require initial funding of $350 million to $700 million over the next five years for about 500MW of PV solar energy.
Nigeria has one of the lowest power consumption per capita worldwide, due to the little amount of power generated by the country’s 23 power stations.
Daily power generation passed through the national grid was below 4GW in June, about one-third the amount of power generated by New York City.
Most homes and businesses have resorted to off-grid solutions, with self-generation in small-scale diesel and petrol generators accounting for nearly 14GW capacity, according to Energy for Growth Hub.
