The corpse of a child has been brought out of the debris of the three-storey building that collapsed in Ebute Metta, a suburb of Lagos Sunday night.

This brings the death toll in the incident to 9, made up of six males and three females.

No fewer than 23 others have been rescued, with nine of them treated and discharged at the scene of the collapse.

Rescuers were still working to bring out more bodies believed to be trapped in the rubble by 3:45 pm local time on Monday.

The building had been marked for demolition by the Lagos State government and the occupants were given a quit notice.

There had been a disagreement over the notice between the tenants and the property owners, and the building was fully occupied when it caved in.
