The kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Bala, who is also known as Wadume has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment.

He was convicted of escaping from lawful custody and unlawfully dealing in prohibited firearms, two of the 13-count charge brought against him and six others.

Two of the other defendants - Uba Bala and Zubairu Abdullahi - were also sentenced to seven years imprisonment each.

Another one - Aliyu Dadje who is a police inspector - was sentenced to three years for tampering with police records to conceal a crime.

Court records show the police station officer tore an entry page to cover up for an army captain and his team who released Wadume and killed some officers who had arrested him.

Rayyanu Abdul was sentenced to three years for harbouring Wadume after he escaped from police custody.

Two other defendants - Auwalu Bala, Bashir Wazlri, and Rayyanu Abdul - were discharged and acquitted for lack of evidence against them.

They were all prosecuted by the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and the judgment was delivered on July 22 but was made available on Sunday.

Wadume was a fish trader in Taraba State who later found kidnapping to be more lucrative.

Wadume arrest

He was arrested by the intelligence response team (IRT) of the Inspector-General of Police but escaped when soldiers opened fire on the team in 2019.

Three policemen and a civilian were killed in the incident.

He was later re-arrested in Kano State.
