The federal government has released 44,656 bags of assorted food items to FCT residents as palliative.

FCT Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud flagged off the distribution of the food items in Gwagwalada on Thursday, saying it was aimed at addressing food shortages and bringing relief to Nigerians in line with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

She broke down the food items received from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security as follows: 23,996 25 kg bags of rice, 4,680 bags of maize, 13,920 bags of sorghum, 960 bags of garri, 1,100 bags of millet, and an additional 9,580 bags.

Mahmoud said the food items would aid in the alleviation of the food scarcity burden and high cost of food items on the most vulnerable people in the society.

To ensure a seamless distribution, the minister instructed the relevant FCTA officials to put the necessary security measures in place to avert stealing of the food bags.

She also appealed to FCT residents to queue responsibly and orderly.

“We are also not oblivious of the fact that for any meaningful development to be sustained, due attention must be placed on the welfare of our citizens,” she said.

“To achieve this, we have placed a priority on re-invigorating the agricultural sector, which is crucial to achieving our collective quest for food and nutrition security.”

She added that the FCT will distribute essential agricultural inputs to farmers, to ensure a successful planting season and abundant food supply.
