President Bola Tinubu addressed Nigeria in a national broadcast on Democracy Day, extolling the heroes who fought to bring democracy to the country.

He expressed his gratitude to Nigerians for being there for another Democracy Day celebration, adding that it symbolized 25 years of continuous democratic government.

The president praised the persons who worked to enthrone democracy in Nigeria, mentioning their names while highlighting the country's transformation from a military dictatorship to a global democracy in 1999.

"We won't look back from this transformation, and history won't forget the profound significance of this historic occasion," President Tinubu said.

“Today, 25 years later, we celebrate the silver anniversary of our journey in democracy."

The president emphasized that true democracy allows for freedom and liberty in daily life, promoting diverse perspectives and viewpoints, without assuming unity of opinion or forcing conflicting ideas, recognizing the diversity of human experiences.

He disclosed that democracy requires non-forceful resolution of differences, allowing for differing views, and promoting humility in leaders to serve the common good, rather than imposing narrow interests.

“My dear compatriots, Nigeria faced a decision of untold gravity 25 years ago: Whether to veer toward a better destination or continue aimlessly in the fog of dictatorship.”

“We made the right choice then. We must continue with that choice now,” he added.

Nigerians must recognize that democracy is the best form of governance in the long run, but must be aware of potential threats to undermine or destroy it.

He acknowledged complaints of economic downturn and hardship while saying the reforms his government initiated would strengthen future growth.

"They are necessary repairs for long-term economic stability, ensuring fair pay and compensation for labor," he said.

“As we continue to reform the economy, I shall always listen to the people and will never turn my back on you.”

President Tinubu said he would send an executive bill to the National Assembly for an increased national minimum wage.

He also asked Nigerians to unite in advancing the country and preserving democracy for future generations.
