At least 29 persons have been confirmed dead after a boat carrying about 50 passengers capsized in Bagwai Local government area of Kano Tuesday evening.
Bagwai Local Government Chairman Inuwa, Zangina 'Dangada confirmed the incident to our sister station, Wazobia FM, Kano.
Earlier, he told our correspondent that 20 persons died but in the last few minutes, Information Officer Bagwai LGA, DaTasi'u Jibo Dawanau has confirmed that nine more bodies have been recovered.
Thankfully, six survivors have been treated and discharged from Bgwai General Hospital.
We also gather that most of the victims are students and teachers of Ahababu Islamic School.
Sources told Wazobia FM, Kano that the victims were returning to Bagwai town from Badau village at about 6pm.
We hear this was after their annual Maulud in commemoration of the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad.
The spokesman of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, also confirmed the incident.
He says the rescue operation which was suspended last night is ongoing at the moment
