A Nigerian has shared how his age limited his access to certain privileges as a student in Austria.
Victor called Nigeria Info’s Hello Port Harcourt and said he “overstayed before getting into the university.” He added that he “was seen to be above the acceptable school age,” being in his 30s and most of his Masters classmates in their 20s.
Reflecting on this, he voiced his concerns about the Federal Government’s policy requiring both the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO) to enforce an 18-year age limit for candidates taking the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSCE). Starting in 2025, JAMB will also mandate that anyone applying to a university in Nigeria must meet the required age of 18, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, had disclosed.
Victor describes the policy as a "bad" idea that could negatively impact young students' opportunities.
