The Supreme Court has upheld a six-year jail term handed to a former federal director of pension, John Yakubu Yusuf, over a pension scam.
The apex court also ordered Mr. Yusuf to refund N22.9 billion to the federal government.
The former director had approached the apex court to challenge his six years of imprisonment by the Court of Appeal.
The Case Against Yusuf
Mr. Yusuf was accused of working with five others to steal N32.8 billion from the Police Pension Fund.
He was initially convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment with an option of a fine of N750, 000 by a Federal Capital Territory High Court, in a plea-bargain arrangement.
That conviction led to national outrage. The EFCC appealed the judgment, and in 2018, the Appeal Court found him guilty of diverting billions in pension money to personal use.
He was sentenced to a fresh prison term of six years and a fine of N22.9 million.
He was on the run after the appellate judgment but was arrested in June 2020 and remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja.
