The practice of ‘Rag Day’, which is one of the activities of the student unions in Nigerian universities, seems to have taken a different shape in recent times.

On Nigeria Info’s Hello Port Harcourt, Jude shares how to his greatest surprise, he received a ‘sophisticated’ message with a bar code, account number and name, soliciting support in the name of the ‘Rag Day’ celebration.

Recalling how the original purpose of the activity was to support charitable causes and NGOs, Jude asks if it is still relevant.

A caller tells him that the nature of the activity has changed as the times have changed, but the purpose remains the same.

“Rag Day was meant to solicit for the students who were the less privileged, and it’s still the same up till today. So, it shouldn’t stop, it’s still serving its purpose, just that the less privileged is (sic) now the people soliciting,” he explained.
