Nigeria is a big local government, says socio-political commentator

Legal practitioner and socio-political commentator, Liborous Oshoma, has said Nigeria's development is being hampered by a wrong delegation of responsibilities.

Oshoma, in a recent conversation about restructuring on Nigeria Info's Hard Facts, argued that certain international dialogues are being attended by executive officials, ultimately stalling the nation's progress.

He highlighted a systemic issue within Nigeria's governance structure, and a fundamental disparity in how Nigeria allocates responsibilities compared to other nations. He pointed out that projects frequently managed by local governments elsewhere in the world – such as ports – fall under the purview of the federal government in Nigeria.

This, he argued, centralizes decision-making and diverts resources away from where they are most needed, hindering local initiative and growth.

“Nigeria is a big local government, so when local governments in other places sit down to discuss, our ministers will sit down and interface with them. That is why what we have is development in one place – Abuja,” he said.
