The June 12, 1993 election, adjudged by many as Nigeria’s 'freest and fairest', was conducted under Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s military government. While the National Electoral Commission (NEC), led by Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, played a role, the question remains—should Babangida get the credit?

According to journalist and Public Affairs Analyst Olalekan Ige, former Nigerian military leader Babangida’s government cannot take credit for it.

He made this known during a conversation on Nigeria Info’s Hard Facts on whether Babangida’s recent account of events has solved the June 12 issue. Ige revisited Babangida’s controversial political maneuvers, which earned him the nickname ‘Maradona’ likening him to the legendary footballer known for his skillful dribbling.

Ige also argued that Babangida’s reluctance to leave power casts doubt on his intentions. So, does Babangida deserve credit for organising the election, or should history remember him for obstructing democracy? The debate continues.
