Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chinedu Mmom, has said it is “not out of place” for students in public schools to clean and get the school environment ready for learning as schools resume.
Prof. Mmom made this known on Nigeria Info’s Hard Facts where he was having a conversation with Dayo Elusakin about the state of public primary and secondary education in Rivers State.
He said although he is now a professor, in his school days, he and other students had cutlasses and brooms which were used for cutting grasses and other sanitary purposes.
“When we went to school, we came back to school with our cutlasses, brooms… to keep the compound clean,” he said.
When asked about reports of principals charging illegal fees from students, he revealed that “about seven principals are now on suspension”, adding that machinery has been put in place to get rid of "bad eggs in the system”.
