SERAP’s Deputy Director Kolawole Oluwadare has explained the implication of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike’s car and house gifts to judges.

In an interview on Nigeria Info’s Hard Facts, he said governors or ministers gifting cars and houses to judges is “an undue influence” that prevents them (judges) from doing their jobs “objectively”.

Recall that in October, the FCT Minister launched the design and construction of 40 judges' residences in Abuja’s Katampe District. During a media briefing on Wednesday, he dismissed claims that constructing homes for judges in Abuja is an attempt to sway them for political purposes. He also stated that the initiative was approved in the 2024 budget and is part of a welfare package introduced by President Bola Tinubu to strengthen judicial independence.
