The U.S. Consul General in Nigeria, Will Stevens, has expressed deep concern about the environmental devastation caused by oil theft in Ogoniland, calling it "riveting and upsetting" after witnessing the damage firsthand from an aerial view.
Stevens, during an interview on Nigeria Info's Hard Facts program, emphasised the U.S. government's commitment to supporting Nigeria in tackling critical issues. He highlighted ongoing partnerships with Nigerian agencies to address the environmental damage caused by oil theft, including oil spill relief efforts.
Beyond oil theft, Stevens discussed broader areas of collaboration. He acknowledged the impact of climate change and spoke on the U.S. government’s support for combating its effects, encompassing healthcare and humanitarian interventions.
In addition, he assured Nigerians that the U.S. Consulate is actively streamlining the visa application process, aiming to make travel to the United States easier.
“We have done quite a bit to ease the process for applying for visas,” he said.
