As schools across Rivers State resume a new academic session, educationist Wenenda Wali has raised concerns about the increasing financial strain on parents caused by additional school levies.
Wali, speaking on Nigeria Info’s Hard Facts, said the burden of extra charges for development, ICT, and extracurricular activities, which he believes should be part of the standard tuition fees, compounded by the recent hike in petrol price, are causing significant distress for many parents.
According to Wali, there is a need for urgent intervention, calling for "standardisation in the system," and suggesting an education summit to address these growing concerns.
He further warned that if these issues are not resolved, the consequences could extend beyond the financial strain as children might be driven towards more attractive but harmful alternatives, such as engaging in social vices, due to the pressures and limitations placed on their education by these additional costs.
