The Death toll in South Africa has risen to over 72 people following sporadic violence in major towns.

Almost 800 people have also been arrested in the unrest since the country's former President Jacob Zuma handed himself into police last week to serve a 15-month jail term for contempt of court. He had refused to appear at an anti-corruption commission to face several allegations, including bribery and fraud, which he has repeatedly denied.

Police Ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba disclosed that more than 1,200 others have been arrested in the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal — where Zuma is from and Gauteng.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said there was not yet a need to declare a state of emergency over the violence in these provinces.
