How To Manage Diabetes By Dr Tuyi Mebawondu

Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly regulate levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood.

It’s a condition that can lead to serious complications if left untreated, including heart disease, nerve damage, blindness, and kidney failure.

However, with proper treatment and management, people with diabetes can live healthy, active lives.

On Health Thursday with Sheriff Quadry,  Dr. Tuyi Mebawondu offered advice on how to properly manage diabetes.

For primary management of diabetes, he recommends proper diabetes education. This includes learning as much as possible about the condition including your family history with diabetes.

Having learned about diabetes, check your lifestyle. Do you smoke obsessively? Do you drink alcohol in excess? If yes, you should focus on weight loss, cutting down on alcohol and taking other measures.

Because any tiny infection in a diabetes patient gets exaggerated, make sure you pay attention to the subtle signs of diabetes, including tiredness, dizziness, a wound that has refused to heal, and your heart, and kidney.

Don't forget to pay attention to your diet. Eat a fiber-rich diet, nuts, fruits, and foods that don’t have loads of carbohydrates.

When it comes to secondary care, make sure you take your medications as prescribed and monitor your glucose levels regularly.
