Callers react to law allowing women to inherit family property

The Rivers State House of Assembly recently passed into law the Rivers State Prohibition of the Curtailment of the Rights of Women to Share in Family Property Bill 2022.

On Hello Port Harcourt, Jude Omamegbe brought this law to the front burner, asking callers if they think it will change the mindset of people towards females inheriting property.

A male caller, Wahua, said the law is too open and should be streamlined.

“If a woman is not married, it’s understandable, and there are properties that a woman should inherit, they shouldn’t make it land and so on. If the man has cars, money, they can say okay, give the woman”, he said.

A female caller, Sirabari, said the law is a good one and has been fought for for long. She rose to the defence of women, asking how a woman married into a family could enjoy certain rights, but a woman or girl born into the same family would be deprived of the same rights.

“If a woman that marries into a compound is benefiting from my father, why won’t my own children too, when I am also a daughter, a child of that man, why won’t my own children benefit?" she asked.
