Why Polytechnics Have Been Shut Down -ASUP

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) says the federal government’s failure to pay the N15 billion revitalisation fund, among other demands is the reason for the closure of polytechnics nationwide.

The National President of ASUP, Anderson Ezeibe, revealed this in an interview on Morning Crossfire on Tuesday.

Ezeibe told Sheriff Quadry that the union signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the federal government last year that led to the suspension of its previous strike.

The MoU stipulated a three-month timeline for the implementation of the agreement reached.

In spite of that, ASUP is yet to receive the N15 billion already approved by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The union is uninterested in renegotiating the terms already agreed unless there is a significant indication of interest by the government, the ASUP President said.

Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) embarked on a 14-day warning strike on Monday.

Their demands include an upgrade in polytechnic infrastructure and payment of the arrears of polytechnic employees.
