Ahmed Bola Tinubu has been sworn in as the sixth president of Nigeria.
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 25 February election was sworn in at Eagle Square on Monday morning after taking the oath of office.
The oath of office was administered to him by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola, in the presence of hundreds of dignitaries, including outgoing President Muhammadu Buhari; his deputy, Yemi Osinbajo; and the presidents of other countries.
Tinubu climbed the podium where he took the oath in the company of his wife, Oluremi Tinubu.
The new president pledged allegiance to Nigeria.
“I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, do solemnly swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that I preserve, protect, and defend the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So, help me, God,” Tinubu swore.
“I, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, do solemnly swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. That, as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I will discharge my duties and perform my functions honestly, to the best of my ability, and faithfully, in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the law.
“That I will abide by the code of conduct contained in the fifth schedule to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“That I will not allow my personal interest to influence my official conduct or my official decisions.
“That I will preserve, protect, and defend the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. So, help me, God,” Tinubu concluded.
Thereafter, he signed the dotted lines cementing his inauguration as the president of Nigeria.
The incoming vice president, Kashim Shettima had earlier done the same, accompanied by his wife, Nana Shettima.
Tinubu and Shettima were declared the winners of the 2023 Presidential Election with 8,794,726 votes, which accounted for 36.6 percent of all the valid votes cast.
Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), came second with 6,984,520 votes, while Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) came third with 6,101,536 votes.
Atiku and Obi are in court challenging the outcome of the election.
Both have alleged that the election was marred by irregularities.
They also contend that Tinubu was unqualified to run for president.
