The Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, says President Bola Tinubu is yet to order the reopening of all Nigerian borders.
After a meeting with President Tinubu at the State House on Tuesday, the Comptroller General of Customs clarified that only five have been reopened.
“It is not true that all Nigerian borders have been opened,” he said.
“The status quo ante still exists in the borders. If you remember that the borders were completely shut down in 2018 until 2022, when some selected strategic borders were reopened, that is the situation as we speak.”
Plans are underway to reopen the others, he added.
He said his discussion with President Tinubu centered on the active engagement of Customs administrations across Nigeria's strategic borders to enhance border and regional security.
The Acting Comptroller of Customs added that he would visit The Republic of Benin in a week to seek partnerships on border security, importation, and the deployment of technology solutions to complex border situations.
Adeniyi was optimistic that smuggling would end soon.
All Nigerian land borders were closed from 2018 to 2022 in what former President Muhammadu Buhari said was to check illegal activities.
