The vice chairman of the Lagos chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress says the federal government betrayed labor unions and violated his commitment by increasing petrol prices.
Olabisi Idowu told Nigeria Info on the Morning Crossfire on Monday that organized labor accepted the government’s N70,000 minimum wage rather than sticking to its N250,000 demand on the condition that fuel prices won’t increase.
“Even though the N70,000 is nothing to write home about, we agreed, but with what we are seeing, the federal government stabbed us in the back,” he said.
On Wednesday, 9 October, NNPC raised petrol prices at its retail stations. In Abuja, the price increased from N897 to N1,030 a liter and from N868 to N998 in Lagos.
Prices increased in other locations, inciting Nigerians.
“We look at their actions (increasing the fuel price) as barbaric,” Idowu said.
According to him, labor demands that the pump price be reversed to what it was when an agreement was reached with the government.
