Telecoms Tariff Hike: NLC Suspends Planned Protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress has resolved to suspend the one-day nationwide rally against the proposed 50% tariff increase in the cost of telecom service.

The protest was earlier scheduled to be held on Tuesday, 4 February.

The NLC announced the suspension after Monday’s meeting in Abuja, organized by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

The government and the NLC agreed to set up a 10-person committee to review the study conducted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The committee, with five representatives from each of the federal government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), will draft an implementable resolution in two weeks.

The NLC president, Comrade Joe Ajero, said the labor union agreed to give the committee two weeks to submit its deliberations.

Comrade Ajero emphasized labor’s displeasure at the tariff hike and the negative impact of the government’s tax policies on Nigerians.

The Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, said the deliberations between both parties were fruitful.
