Sinner Defends Australian Open Title, Dashes Zverev’s Grand Slam Hopes

World number 1 and the defending champion of the Australian Open, Jannick Sinner, has successfully defended his title at the 2025 Australian Open, defeating world number 2, German Alexander Zverev in straight sets, 6-3 7-6(7-4) 6-3.

In a one-sided affair that lasted about two hours and forty-five minutes at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, the 23-year-old Italian dominated from the start, didn’t drop any service game, and only lost two games in the second set tie-break.

The young Italian dropped only two sets throughout the tournament after seven matches, including the final which was watched by a packed crowd at the over 14,000-capacity stadium in Melbourne.

During the post-match presentation, the losing finalist Zverev congratulated his opponent and his team, and regarded him as the best player in the world. He also thanked the tournament director and organisers and promised he’d keep coming and keep trying to win it.

He also thanked his team for their work and effort from the time of his ankle injury to his rise to world number 2.

In another development during the trophy ceremony, two women repeatedly shouted, "Australia believes Olya and Belinda," causing some tension around the stands just as Alexander Zverev was about to speak. Olya and Belinda are the names of the two women who accused Alexander Zverev of assault.

Zverev reached an out-of-court settlement with Belinda Patea for €200,000, but the case remains in the minds of some activists.
