President Bola Tinubu, who chairs the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), has restatedthe bloc’s commitment to the sanctions imposed on the Niger junta.
He told Hermann Immongault, the special envoy of Gabonese President Ali Ondimba, that no form of interference in democratic governance would not be accepted in Africa.
He also commended the solidarity shown by the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) in supporting the ECOWAS resolutions regarding the crisis in Niger.
Tinubu highlighted the importance of maintaining the sanctions and working to resolve the crisis through diplomatic means.
The sanctions on Niger were imposed following the military takeover that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
The junta, led by Gen. Abdourahmane Tchiani, is outraged by the prohibitions and has called for the restoration of electricity, which Nigeria cut off as part of the strategy to restore the ousted president.
The junta has also voiced concerns over the threat of military intervention to restore democracy.
This is coming as West African military chiefs are set to convene in Accra, Ghana, this week to discuss the activation of ECOWAS' standby force, despite the junta's willingness to engage in dialogue.
