Organized labor trooped out en mass in Kano on Wednesday to protest against the federal government's removal of petrol subsidy.
Civil Society organizations (CSOs), members of the Academic Staff of Nigeria Universities (ASUU), and student unions joined in the demonstration called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The protest commenced at around 7 am at the Murtala Muhammad Library and caused traffic on the Ahmadu Bello Way, forcing motorists to follow one lane of the dual road.
The protesters sang solidarity songs as they marched to the Kano State Government House to submit their demands.
Security personnel from the DSS, police, and Civil Defence were on the ground to provide adequate security for the protestors.
The Kano State chairman of the NLC, Comrade Kabiru Inuwa, told journalists that the groups are demanding the return of petrol subsidy, which would halt hardship being experienced across the country.
Comrade Inuwa further revealed that the protest was to express the grievances of Nigerians and compel the federal government to enact policies to cushion the economic impact of the fuel subsidy removal across the country.
After receiving the written demands of the protesting groups, the Secretary to the Kano State Government, Dr. Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, assured the NLC that the state will pass it to the federal government for prompt action.
“I want to assure you that we are in this together with all Nigerians. I would personally give this letter to the state governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, who will subsequently submit it to the federal government," he said.
