The Nigerian Labour Congress and its affiliate unions are reconsidering their planned nationwide strike, which was scheduled to commence on Wednesday.
NLC Secretary, Emma Ugbaja, announced this on Tuesday at the State House, Abuja after a meeting of the Presidential Steering Committee on Palliatives.
He said labor leaders would consult with unionists before midnight (Tuesday) to agree on their next action.
The Chief of Staff to the president, Femi Gbajabiamila, said the deliberations between the government and labor leaders were cordial.
“Basically, we laid out the plan and the intervention of the President as you all heard in his broadcast yesterday,” he told State House correspondents.
“We made it clear that this was Mr. President’s initial roll-out intervention and then the conversations will be ongoing as we go along.
“We indeed appealed to labor to call off their protests for tomorrow (Wednesday).
“We’ve found listening ears here and they all accepted that Mr. President’s broadcast was a welcome development and that they'll go back home to talk to the other leaders.
“So, we're hopeful that they will do the right thing and not protest tomorrow,” he added.
Mr. Ugbaja said the federal government’s palliatives were welcoming but not far-reaching.
