The Lagos State Government has emphasized that the seizure of motorcycle taxis (okada) by its Task Force will continue, ahead of the June 1 deadline issued by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
A statement from the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso reminded riders that the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018 states that “no persons shall ride, drive or propel a motorcycle or tricycle on a major highway within the State.”
Mr. Omotoso said Governor Sanwo-Olu’s June 1 deadline does not invalidate the provisions of the law.
The emphasis is coming as riders who have been operating on highways and bridges claim they are free to do so until June 1.
Meanehile, the Lagos State Task Force, led by CSP Shola Jejeloye, has continued to enforce the law.
It seized 238 motorcycles in Lekki on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The task force also seized 195 motorcycles in Iba on Lagos-Badagry Expressway, where it was violently resisted on Thursday.
It would be recalled that the state governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had on Wednesday, announced a total ban on Okada on all highways and in six Local Government Areas of Eti-Osa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Apapa, and Surulere.
