The German construction company Julius Berger has handed over the Second Niger Bridge to the Nigerian government, seven months after the bridge’s inauguration.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi was conducted around the bridge and the adjoining roads on Sunday by the Managing Director of Julius Berger, Lars Richter.
Umahi described the work done by the company as “impeccable, very beautiful, and well completed.”
He, however, noted that the government would work at lighting the bridge with sustainable energy sources.
“We have light issues and we’ve put things together on how to permanently have light, especially at night,” he said.
“What we have agreed is to deploy solar solution in the coming weeks so that every night we don’t have to run diesel.”
He also said work on the roads leading to the bridge from the South-South would be sped up.
“The roads are going to be completed when we have completed the two interchanges.
One is taking us off from Asaba town to cut off the traffic and the other one is going to be done by Reynolds Construction Company (RCC) Ltd to avoid Onitsha town and take you straight to Obosi,” said Umahi.
The minister told journalists that Closed-Circuit (CCTV) cameras would be installed for security, in addition to security personnel who would be able to provide help within five minutes.
