Iran’s Cabinet Holds New Emergency Session After President’s Death

The Iranian cabinet has convened a second emergency meeting in less than 24 hours following the confirmation of the death of President Ebrahim Raisi.

The conference was presided over by Iranian Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber on Sunday evening, following the disappearance of a helicopter carrying nine persons over the northwest of Iran.

On Sunday afternoon, Raisi and Amirabdollahian's plane vanished from the radar as he was returning from a meeting with Ilham Aliyev, the president of neighboring Azerbaijan.

According to reports, the helicopter crash claimed the life of Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian as well.

By convention, Mokhber should take over after Raisi's passing, subject to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s approval. Then, new elections must be held in 50 days.
