Ikoyi Building Collapse: Lagos to Deconstruct Remaining High-Rises (VIDEO)

The Lagos State Government will be deconstructing two of the standing high-rise buildings at 42 Gerrard Road in Ikoyi where a 21-floor building collapsed on 1 November 2021.

45 people lost their lives when the building gave way, including the building’s owner, Femi Osibona who was the Managing Director, of Fourscore Homes Limited.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso announced the deconstruction at a media briefing in Alausa attended by the Commissioners for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, Tayo Bamgbose-Martins; and Physical Planning and Urban development, Idris Salako.

Mr. Omotoso said the deconstruction is in fulfillment of the recommendations of the panel which investigated the collapse.

The two standing high-rises failed an integrity test, according to the panel.

Mr. Omotoso also said a meeting had been held with residents of the neighbourhood and stakeholders in the building industry.

He assured the news conference that any action taken on the project was in the interest of the public.

The deconstruction would be undertaken in collaboration with a consultant, Theophilus Lewo.

It would last 90 days but could be extended due to the weather and the safety of the workers, Mr. Lewo said.

A minute silence was observed in honour of those who lost their lives in the 1 November 2021 collapse.
