Nigeria’s female under-17 team, the Flamingoes on Friday advanced to the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup taking place in India after defeating the United States of America 4-3 on penalties.
Nigeria took the lead in the first half when Omamuzo Edafe scored from a penalty kick after forward, Amina Bello, was fouled.
The Americans equalized through Amalia Villareal just before the break.
The game ended in a draw after 90 minutes which led to the penalty shootout.
With the victory, Nigeria reached the last four of the tournament for the first time.
The Flamingoes are also the first team to reach the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup.
After the match, Nigeria’s coach Bankole Olowookere said he was elated by the team’s performance.
He added that the team will improve on its lapses ahead of the semifinal match on Wednesday, October 26.
Nigeria will play the winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal between Columbia and Tanzania.
