CSOs Seek Executive Order Upholding Naira Swap Deadline

The Coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) of Nigeria has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign an executive order to maintain 10 February as the terminal date for the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes.

“We call on the president to exercise his constitutional power. We may suggest that he should make an urgent Executive Order to set the terminal date for the new currency to remain February 10, 2023, which he has the power to do under the law as the ex parte order made outside the jurisdiction cannot stop the Executive Order of the President,” the coalition’s national coordinator, Obed Okwukwe said at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

Okwukwe described Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling suspending the implementation of the 10 February deadline as a design to enable politicians to buy votes during the 2023 General Election.

He said the CSOs reject the ruling and urged the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoolato vacate the order.
